Summer Happens

June:

This spring has been very dry; the whole area has been. But we are catching up. Since the 22nd of June we have gotten over two inches of rain, with the majority of it in 45 minutes one early morning. Before the rain, the grass in the orchard was very crispy much like it is in August. It has greened up a bit and no longer crackles when you walk out there.

The last half of June is my favorite part of the month. The garden is up and big enough to see the plants from the deck. Most years we are starting to pick fruit. Since we are harvesting less fruit this year, we are getting some of those projects done that we say we will get to tomorrow, next week, later this month or even next year. It is very nice to get some of those things checked off the list.

Even with the late freeze we will still have some fruit to harvest, I think it will be primarily raspberries and some elder berries. While the currants and goose berries have some fruit it is only a small percentage of a normal year and we hope to get enough for ice cream. Even a little is better than none. Over all June has been a very beautiful month.

July is always an exciting month. With fruit ripening and veggies ready to be harvested and our annual field day it is a busy month. We are extra excited this year, we are hosting Brunch on a Bench. It will feature baked goods/pastries spotlighting fruit from the orchard. Locally roasted coffee, Montana made teas and Montana sourced milk for those of us who don’t do coffee. It is July 18th. You can get tickets on our webpage. Stop by pick up something to drink, something to eat and enjoy the company, the birds and the view. We have benches all around the orchard to enjoy and for those who either can’t or don’t want to wander, we a lovely patio behind the shop to enjoy the morning.

Another exciting thing is our annual field day. It is always the 4th Friday in July. This year it is on the 24th. As always everyone is welcome whether it is your first visit or your sixth. It is an enjoyable evening with food, ice cream, and great company. This year we will have a few less ice creams to try but that just means you might be able to taste them all this year.

We hope everyone has a wonderful July, hopefully we will see you at least once this summer.
